How to find an old friend online with just a photo
Most people go quiet online long before they disappear. Old handles get abandoned, last names change, cities change. Here is the order that actually works when all you have is an old photo and a first name.

How it works
- 1Pick the clearest photo you have. Face straight on, eyes visible, no sunglasses. Do not crop it small or screenshot a screenshot, detail matters more than recency.
- 2Run a face search across public sources. This finds pages where the same face appears, even under a different name.
- 3Take any username or handle you find and search it on its own. Handles are reused across platforms far more often than names.
- 4Add what you know, a city, a school, a workplace, to a name search to confirm you have the right person before reaching out.
- 5Reach out on your own terms. There is no reason to mention how you found them beyond a public profile.

Does a photo from 15 years ago still work?
Often yes. Face matching handles ageing reasonably well, though a newer photo always gives stronger matches.
Will they know I searched for them?
