Reverse image search: the complete guide

Reverse image search takes a photo you already have and tells you where else that image — or, in the case of face search, that person — exists online. Here's how each type works, what to use for what, and how to run one in under a minute.

What reverse image search actually does

A reverse image search takes an image as input and returns places that image (or a similar one) has appeared. There are two categories that get lumped together but do very different things: pixel-based search and face-based search.

Pixel-based (Google, TinEye)

Google Images and TinEye compare the pixels themselves. Great for finding the source of a product photo, a meme, or an artwork. Terrible for finding a person. Change the crop, the lighting, or the filter and pixel matching returns nothing.

Face-based (PimEyes, FaceCheck, Discover Anyone)

Face-based tools ignore the pixels and look at the geometry of the face. That's what lets them find the same person in a different photo, on a different site, years apart. This is what you want if you're trying to verify a dating match, spot a catfish, or find someone you've lost touch with.

When to use which

• Verifying a person's identity — face-based search.

• Finding lost family or friends — face search is the only realistic option.

How to reverse image search a person

1. Pick the clearest photo you have. Front-facing, well-lit, one face. Crop tight if it's a group shot.
